Gal 3:2 says, “Did you receive the Spirit by the Law or by faith in Christ?” In the Old Testament, the Spirit fell on people for a specific purpose such as the 70 men in Numbers and Saul in Samuel. However, in the New Testament, the system changed.

When Jesus died, was buried, and rose from the grave the system changed in our favor. The good news is we aren’t living before the cross.

On our side of the cross, and because of the cross, Jesus offers his Spirit to everyone who believes in him. Once I got that, I was so relieved. I can’t “fall out of favor with God” or we don’t have to “usher in the spirit” with a 2-hour long worship set before the sermon. Matt couldn’t have chosen a better closing scripture than Ephesians 1 because it clearly answers the question. We are 100% forever SEALED by Grace through faith.

At Heritage, we get real excited about that because it truly is that simple.

Serve Sunday

Matt Graves - This past Sunday, we did something that we’ve never done before. We didn’t have an in-person or online service. Instead, we went out into the community and served others. We had almost 100 people show up to serve Texarkana. As your pastor, I am grateful and humbled that we have an environment where that is possible and that so many of you would show up to serve on a holiday weekend. Thank you!

We didn’t have an in-person or online service. Instead, we went out into the community and served others. We had almost 100 people show up to serve Texarkana. As your pastor, I am grateful and humbled that we have an environment where that is possible and that so many of you would show up to serve on a holiday weekend. Thank you!
Perhaps you’ve heard the expression, “You can tell a lot about a person by the way they treat the servers at a restaurant.” I have friends who own businesses, and they will take candidates for employment out to eat and preempt the server ahead of time with requests to intentionally mess up their orders so they can see how that person treats the server when everything doesn’t go his or her way.
What is the role of a server? Isn't it to care for the needs and wants of the people dining out? They take your order, they refill your drinks, they deliver your food, and they bus your table when you’re finishing up. Their sole job is to take great care of their guests, to serve them. Some of us have had or currently have jobs similar to servers, jobs where our sole purpose is in serving another person. As a believer, it’s not our “job” to serve others. It’s our calling as new creations in Christ.
You’ve probably heard us talk about our vision to Transform Texarkana. It comes from the passage in Acts 17 where the apostle Paul and some of his co-workers for the gospel were going into Thessalonica. The Jews in the city were jealous and took some of Paul’s acquaintances to the city authorities and said, “These men who have upset the world have come here also.” The meaning in that phrase is one of transformation and being turned upside down. That is what we hope to do here in Texarkana.
And that looks like a lot of things, maybe it's just offering a helping hand in something small, or going out of your way to be helpful, or making your spouse a cup of morning coffee, or perhaps bringing a meal to new parents. There are numerous ways we can serve one another. And at Heritage, we don’t give you a list of things “to do”. We create opportunities for you to partner with us to serve others. But we believe ultimately it is the role of the Holy Spirit to guide and direct you into other ways to serve.--As a believer, it’s not our “job” to serve others. It’s our calling as new creations in Christ.
We believe it starts with growing in the knowledge and wisdom of Christ. That’s what Paul says in Colossians 1:9, that “we have not ceased praying for you and asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding.”
Now pay attention to how he opens verse 10. He says, “SO THAT you will walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please Him in all respects, bearing fruit in EVERY GOOD WORK and increasing in the knowledge of God.”
Did you notice his formula? Be filled with knowledge and wisdom and understanding, so that you will walk in a manner worthy.
Religion tells you to just do good deeds and hopefully, you’ll do enough that God will be pleased with you. That merely fuels the pride in our lives. On the other hand, religion also tells you to gain all the knowledge of every scripture and the only thing that matters is increasing in knowledge.
The problem is, both are extremes on either end. Good deeds done in the flesh only fuel your pride and ego and have nothing to do with being led by the Spirit. And being filled with all the knowledge in the world is useless if its result isn’t love. Paul addresses that in 1 Corinthians 13:2, “If I know all mysteries and all knowledge; and if I have all faith to move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing.”
Don’t get me wrong, studying and knowing scripture is where we understand who Christ is, what it means for Christ to be in you, and to know the power of the resurrection that lives in you. But knowledge isn’t the end of the instruction, it’s the beginning. Paul makes that clear to Timothy in the opening of his first letter, 1 Timothy 1:5, “The goal of our instruction is love….” Paul says, in essence, “Listen Timothy, I am about to give you a lot of instruction, and everything that I have ever taught you and everything I am saying in this letter I am writing you has one goal: LOVE.”
That is the hope for all that we do at Heritage. It is to love one another in a way that makes them curious about Jesus. This past Sunday was an example of that.Galatians 5:13b, “…but through love serve one another.”
Thank you for being a church that hasn’t lost sight of the goal!

Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him, knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, is never to die again; death no longer is master over Him. For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God. Even so consider yourselves to be dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus. Romans 6:5-11
At belief our old self is dead, we are raised IN Christ, no longer slaves to sin, no longer identified as a sinner.

I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me. Galatians 2:20
That’s huge! It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. That’s a lot more than a sinner saved by grace. We are the righteousness of Christ, I’d like to encourage anyone that may struggle in this area, to search the scripture for yourselves and see this is truth, and walk in the freedom and victory that Christ has given us.

Christianese Wk5, God Needed Another Angel

David Magness - What a great message from Pastor Matt this past weekend as he continued his series Christianese. I would strongly encourage you to go listen at www.heritagechurch.org if you missed it. As believers, we have access to the God of ALL comfort (2 Corinthians 1:3-4).Have you ever wondered how people get through trials and heartache without knowing the Lord? I know there have been seasons of my life that I wouldn’t want to walk through without Christ and HIS faith (not mine) to rest in (Galatians 2:20). Our God is the God of peace that doesn’t make sense (Phillippians 4:7), and it’s during those tough times that we need to renew our minds to the truth of who our God is! Even when we lack the words to pray, the Spirit intercedes for us (Romans 8:26). The world needs a peace that doesn’t make sense, and we have the answer as ambassadors of Christ. People are seeking comfort all around us in things of this world that aren’t sustainable. Without Christ, all we are left with is wishful thinking and self-help in times of need.

Christianese - Jesus Take the Wheel

Bob Murray - Pastor Matt continued in the Christianese Series with Jesus Take the Wheel this past Sunday. To me, the thought behind this message spoke to the tendency of Christians wanting to hand off to Jesus as a last resort for our mess-ups instead of living out of our identity in Christ. And the conclusion was one that is often missed, namely, when we live from our identity, there will be an inexplicable difference in how we conduct our lives.

And that key component is a knowledge of the Word of Truth, rightly divided. Pastor Matt pointed to this at the end of his message with the simple recommendation that Believers consider reading (and better yet studying) the words of Christ in the writings of the Apostle Paul (Romans through Philemon). For without a knowledge of the rightly divided Scripture, a Believer does not have truths upon which to base your beliefs regarding who you are in Christ, and therefore, there cannot be a walk upon this basis.

Believer, it begins with a belief of the Word, which leads to a rested belief, and results in an inexplicable walk from that belief. But a knowledge of the Word is the prerequisite for such belief. Study the Word!

Christianese - Cleanliness Is Next To Godliness

Bill Morel - Matt outlined several scriptures referencing humans' wicked or deceitful hearts and inability to "live right." He started with Matthew 23, where Jesus is lighting into the religious leaders a bit because they dress up real nice and put their best self out there, but their hearts we full of "robbery and self-indulgence." Fake it till you make it never flew with Jesus. I laugh when Jesus made the Pharisees look foolish because they were the well-educated and "most knowledgeable" religious people of the day. Then Jesus, this "uneducated," "blue-collar" son of a carpenter, comes in and lines them out. No doubt they knew the story from 1 Samuel about him looking for the next king. They knew or should have known that God's focus is on the heart, not our looks or actions.

This week is one phrase I have always laughed at because I was taught years ago that it's not in the bible anywhere. However, many in Christianity and maybe even organized religions use this phrase, among others, to get us to "clean up our lives and live right." As Matt said, the problem with that is we completely miss that as Christians, we "live right" because Christ has cleaned us, not the other way around.
Matt outlined several scriptures referencing humans' wicked or deceitful hearts and inability to "live right." He started with Matthew 23, where Jesus is lighting into the religious leaders a bit because they dress up real nice and put their best self out there, but their hearts we full of "robbery and self-indulgence." Fake it till you make it never flew with Jesus.
In Acts 15, when Paul and Barnabas came to discuss the relevance of the law to Gentiles, it was the Pharisees again trying to apply the law to us where it didn't apply. This time Peter (a Jew) stood up and made it known that God cleansed the gentiles' hearts by faith. Earlier in Acts 10, God had shown Peter that Gentiles we not "unclean" as he ate with Cornelius and his family. After eating and hearing Cornelius's story, Peter said, in 10:34, he understood now that God doesn't show partiality. God prepared Peter through the chapter 10 experience so he would be ready for the discussion in chapter 15.
When we boil it down, "Cleanliness is next to Godliness" is a phrase that highlights why here at Heritage, we put such emphasis on rightly dividing the truth. If you read Jerimiah 17 and just heard pastor Johnson tell you that "you better get circumcised and start livin' right" without understanding the context, then you may miss the conversation in Acts 15 or Romans 5:5. Matt's comparison to the "catch-all closet" was perfect. Left up to us, our lives would be like cleaning out that drawer or closet. Every time we mess up, we try to do better, again and again, until we are at the end of ourselves, and our closet is so full the door won't shut.
Jesus died for ALL the issues that we stuff behind other issues hoping people won't notice. God wants ALL our burdens. Our wicked old hearts from Jerimiah 17 and everything was buried with Christ. When He rose, we rose with Him filled with the Love of Christ. Through Faith in Christ, He has turned our mess into His cleanliness, so we have the power to walk in Godliness as His ambassadors to the world.

Robert Tyson
Matt is in week 2 of the series "Christianese: Silly Things Christians Say, and the phrase for this week is "God helps those who help themselves." That is a phrase that I have heard since I have been going to church, and truth be told, I have used it in the past. It makes a great self-help phrase since it puts the focus on you and you having to do something in order for God to help you. This was a cultural phrase used by the Greeks and even has been used by Benjamin Franklin, so it must be true - right?
As I stated, I have used it in the past, but I never looked to see what book it was in. It wasn't until I came to Heritage that I learned this wasn't true at all. In fact, it is completely opposite of the truth. But, boy, it sure sounds good, and even sounds spiritual. Matt referenced Isaiah 53:5-6, which states that we have turned, everyone to his own way. We help ourselves, and then God will help us? Religion always points us to something that we have to do. Do we have to pull ourselves up before God will help us up? Solomon stated in Proverbs 14:12 that "There is a way that seems right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death." This is a great example of this statement. We were separated from God; we were helpless and without hope. We could not help ourselves do anything. We were lost and going to hell but God helped us. He did not leave us to our own devises or schemes. He sent Jesus. Romans 5:8 says "But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." David Magness put it this way; "It's because of what was wrong with us, Christ died for us!" It is plain and simple God made the way where there was no we could save ourselves!! Put your faith in the work that Jesus did.
Then the focus shifted to Christians. What are we doing as Christians to help ourselves and others? We don't like letting others into our inner circle. We keep others at arm's length; we get busy doing work, life, church, meetings, working out and the busyness of life and unlimited other things keep us from engaging in life with other Christians. I firmly believe that Covid was sent to disrupt the Church and disrupt the gathering of God's people. Why you ask? Because, to quote the magician on Frosty the Snowman, I have become "Busy, Busy, Busy." I have become so busy doing other things that I have neglected the gathering of God's people. I have lost focus on the main goal of Christians and the focus of Heritage Church.
Our mission at Heritage is to love others in a way that will make them curious. You can't do that if you are focused on the rat race of life. We are to do life together, which helps us build bonds that can't be broken. We are to love others. I remember as a young child, we would go see Uncle Lake and Aunt Suzie. They lived out in the country, and their house was off the road about 100 yards. When we would turn onto their driveway, we could see Uncle Lake start heading towards the house. It did not matter what he was doing; he always stopped and went to the house. Aunt Suzie was the same way. They both dropped everything and focused on us. We were the most important thing to them at the time. No worries about what they were not doing, no worries about what they had to do, no worries about getting the garden planted so they would be able to eat. They just focused on loving us unconditionally, without wanting anything in return. There was never a doubt that they loved us! They would stand out in the yard and wave as we drove off. Not sometimes, but every time we left, you could still see them waving as we turned back onto the main road.
You see, I have been given a great example and a great testimony of how to show love. Looking back, my cell phone has become a distraction. I have noticed that I have it out when family and friends are over. Instead of focusing on loving them, I would catch myself focusing on technology. I would never say that this message was for all Christians or even some Christians, as Matt hit the nail squarely on the head. This message was a good reminder of the pitfall of busyness, and it was meant for me. I am praying that you recognize the dangers of busyness and focus on loving others and that you spend time resting in the finished work of Christ.

Yes, we celebrate the work of the cross every week, but there’s just something about believers gathering together on Easter to give glory to the Name above all names for the finished work of the cross - what a day!
Matt opened a new series titled “Christianese”, where he’ll dig into phrases many Christians say that may not make sense to the un-churched or to the unbeliever. “Are you washed in the blood of the lamb” was the topic for this week. If you grew up in church or have a general knowledge of the Bible you probably know what this refers to. Matt did a great job explaining the connection to salvation, so I would encourage you to go to www.heritagechurch.org to catch the message if you missed it.
For this week, I initially planned to layout many requirements under The Law that were dealt with by Christ at the cross (if you haven’t studied this, please do!), but something Matt touched on struck a chord with me (worship pastor pun). As he went into detail reading from Peter and Paul’s writings, he showed parallels between what the Jews and Gentiles were struggling with; each group of people had traditions and ways of thought that hindered their belief (1 Cor. 1:22-23).
Don’t we still see a version of this today? Yes, Christians may have some funny sayings that don’t make sense to the outside world, but love doesn’t need a translator or an explanation. It breaks down walls and cuts through barriers, and God loved the world so much that he sent Jesus (John 3:16).

Jeff Wood - At Heritage, we go to great lengths to talk about our identity being in Christ. As such, we are to rest in HIS completed work. As Andrew perfectly put it, the Gospel of the Grace of God does not produce laziness. By rightly dividing and studying the word of truth, we continuously further our understanding of what Christ did for us and who we are in Him. By the riches of God's love and grace given to us, every interaction, action, and thought is changed forever. Why? Because it's not I, but Christ. Everything should be through the overflow of God's endless love working in and through my life. Through the message, one of the themes he discussed was how we are created and able to walk in the good works that God has prepared.
Now, admittedly, I hear good works, and little red flags start to go up. However, throughout the past few weeks, we have seen that our justification is through faith without works. By that faith, we have peace with God, and his love has been poured into our hearts by the Holy spirit who was given to us (Romans 5:1-5). At the beginning of Titus 3, Paul is describing what we "WERE"—a keyword in verse 3. And just like Paul always and masterfully does, he immediately throws the big "BUT" in verse 4 that leads to describe who we NOW ARE and what we have through Christ our Savior.
At Heritage, we go to great lengths to talk about our identity being in Christ. As such, we are to rest in HIS completed work. As Andrew perfectly put it, the Gospel of the Grace of God does not produce laziness. By rightly dividing and studying the word of truth, we continuously further our understanding of what Christ did for us and who we are in Him. As such, we are the ministers and ambassadors for the Gospel of Grace in the lives of everyone we encounter. Grace frees us from the requirements of the law so that we can become servants of righteousness (Rom 6:18).
So, it is no longer whether we will try to uphold the law and work for our salvation but choosing to allow Christ to work in and through our lives. Ephesians 2:10 is such a powerful verse. We are his workmanship, created IN CHRIST (don't skip that and go straight to for good works). Why? Because not only is our position in Heavenly places when we are placed in Christ, but HE prepares the overflow of his love and the good works that we get to enjoy and be partakers of. This is a main reason that Paul spent so much time on love and thanksgiving. What Christ freely accomplished allows us to spread that good news and good works this Easter week as His workmanship and masterpiece.

Matt Graves - The instruction to deny oneself is a popular teaching among a lot of evangelical communities. And it sounds super spiritual and humble.
Titus - Chapter 1

Will Huddleston - Colossians 2:6-7 tell us, "As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him: Rooted and built up in him, and established in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving." Pastor began a series this past Sunday entitled Titus, and this passage in Colossians gives us a great foundation for what Paul is writing to Titus and about why Titus was the individual chosen for ministry on the island of Crete.

Crete was a mixing pot of people, cultures, lifestyles, and beliefs as it is situated in the center of the Mediterranean Sea and was a mid-way point for many travelers in the ancient world. As a result, even in this small area, there was a vast array of thoughts, beliefs, and seeming truths that were held...from carefree to moralizers. For any of us that grew up in church, this could sound somewhat familiar.

In Acts 15, we read of a group of Pharisees who had placed their faith in Christ, continuing to put the shackles of law on those whom would believe in Jesus. A specific issue they were dealing with was the act of circumcision. According to their chosen belief, unless you are circumcised, you cannot be saved. Paul took up issue with this and disputed the matter sharply. After being sent to Jerusalem to further discuss the matter with other church leaders, some of the believers from the party of Pharisees stood up and said, "The Gentiles must be circumcised and required to keep the law of Moses." Peter, who was there with Paul and Barnabas, stands up and asks why they would put a yoke on the gentiles that their Jewish forefathers nor they themselves have been able to bear. Then in verse 11, he says, "But we believe that we are saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus, in the same way as they also are."

When we move back into the book of Titus, Chapter 1, we see Paul reminding us of his specific calling. Paul was appointed by God specifically as the apostle to the Gentiles and entrusted with the mystery revealed to Paul at the proper time. He also held Titus as an intimate confidante in that same calling. So, Titus was the man called to appoint elders in the cities and organize the churches for ministry. Just like in Jerusalem, there were those in Crete that were mandating the works of the law in order to be saved as well as a directive to those that would believe. This is where it begins to sound very much like my experience growing up in church, and it may be the same for many of you. Going back to Colossians 2:6-7, you would be hard-pressed to find a church that wouldn't give a hardy amen to the proclamation of that verse. However, hot on the heels of that, you will hear many a big but...you other brothers (and sisters) can't deny. Sorry, as a child of the 80s, I couldn't resist. But it's true...so many times, scriptures would be championed for their truth yet, held in check to their true power and freedom in Christ. Often, I think it is because we are putting faith in ourselves rather than the Holy Spirit that God has placed in us through Christ...we are fearful of what we or others might do rather than trusting the Holy Spirit and His power in our lives. But too often, I'm afraid it is also a measuring stick for those that are worried about appearing righteous, believing that righteous is something it isn't. In fact, Jesus himself, speaking to the Pharisees that knew and worked diligently to keep the law, called them self-righteous and a brood of vipers. The Bible says that the law in and of itself isn't evil...however, it was only delivered to show us of our inability to be righteous, not that if we keep a good portion of it that we would appear to be and therefore so. Jesus abolished the law and took away the need for it. Righteousness for us isn't found through keeping anything but rather accepting the completed work of Jesus Christ. At that moment, we are the very righteousness of God in Christ Jesus...perfected and complete. Our minds may have to be convinced of that, as Paul tells us in Romans 12. Our living, our true and proper worship is to be transformed by the renewing of our mind...in other words, becoming to believe what is already true.

Now, in today's society, many may even say that we no longer have to keep the law; however, there certainly are still rules, regulations, and more so convictions that are placed out there primarily to make sure others are acting as they "should." This is the proverbial measuring stick. And, too often, this measuring stick, due to its self-creation or misappropriation of scripture, tears down friendships, families, churches, and even cities and nations.

We will likely encounter this, and the question we ask shouldn't have anything to do with these people or what is driving them to act in this manner. But rather, it should be, "what should our response be?" How do we stand strong against false teaching, manipulation, and self-righteousness? First, we grow in the grace in knowledge of Jesus Christ through the reading of His word. We must know the truth to be able to discern truth and live in the freedom that is found in Christ. Second, allow that truth to live out in our lives. At the moment of salvation, we were given the completed and ripened fruits of the spirit. They are complete in us. Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, and self-control are noted in Galatians 5:22. They are fruits from Him given completely to bear in our lives. The beautiful thing about Galatians 5:22 is the end of the verse after the fruits are listed...against such things, there is no law. God has equipped us to be different, set apart, unique, and as we allow these fruits to manifest in our lives against them, there is no law. As we respond in love, the world's ways and the trickery of legalism will be silenced. It may not happen immediately, but over time the love of Christ and it expressed and freely given to others will triumph. Do not live in the yoke of slavery...do not allow others to place this yoke on you...do allow the Holy Spirit's way in your life and know the grace, freedom, and love that lives in you through our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. This is our calling, and this is how, together, we will transform Texarkana.

Pastor began a series this past Sunday entitled Titus, and this passage in Colossians gives us a great foundation for what Paul is writing to Titus and about why Titus was the individual chosen for ministry on the island of Crete.
I think the 40 minutes (or so) he spent on those are sufficient, and my attempts here will be more to circle the wagons and perhaps provide a synopsis of sorts of this series. However, if you have been reading the Elder Word during this group of messages, you have received what I believe to be outstanding instruction each and every week from those who have written, kudos men!!!!

Ephesians 5:25-33 is often plucked from the Book to use in marriage seminars and series (and countless "how to" books), often without acknowledging the preceding 122 verses. Chapters 1-3 are deeply instructive for us doctrinally establishing the facts of our "all spiritual blessings," which includes all the foundational understanding of redemption along with the unsearchable riches of Christ we receive when placed into union with him as we are baptized by the Spirit into the Body of Christ. Indeed many of these riches are enumerated in chapters 1-3 as Paul delivers the essence of what is contained in the revelation of the Mystery. Justin Magness did an excellent job in week one of discussing much of this and admonishing us (men), explaining clearly that what is required of us as husbands is impossible without a growing understanding of who we are in Christ giving great attention to the teachings of the apostle Paul to whom was first entrusted the Mystery by Christ Himself.

Week 2 of the series then covered Security of the Believer. Pastor Matt went about using our own security in Christ as a type of security we are to provide our own spouse in the Ephesians 5 example. If we are to love our wives as Christ does the Church, our understanding of "holy and without blame before Him" is a must. Chris Williams did a masterful job of illustrating some of these truths in his "chair" example and I suggest rereading that as you contemplate one of his statements "I believe until you have the security issue settle, you'll never be able to move forward in your spiritual growth ."Then he used Eph 2:4-10 to show our seated position in Christ accordingly, expounding then upon his chair lesson to demonstrate our rest in this position. Back to Justin's week 1 lesson, "men we can't love our wives as our own body if we do not have a thorough understanding of what it means to be in the body of Christ, what it means to be IN Chirst and have Christ IN us ."Security is contained in that understanding, and it takes some effort to dig into a treatise like Ephesians and feast on such. Amen, Justin and Chris, just AMEN.

Week 3 of Happily Ever After was entitled "Crucified ."In this message, AnJo discussed crucifixion of our old man and referred us back to Romans 6, our key to understanding the separation from death and how we now live life. Cody Burt then delivered an excellent follow-up discussing a few of the "baptisms" of the Bible after quoting Rom 6:3-4. He then points out (with much gravity given to the implications) how we are identified with Christ in His death and resurrection, which is the "how" of removing us from old Adam (the responsible man) and placing us into Christ. We are a part of the New Creature!!! Then Cody admonishes us to quit hauling around the dead man and uses that classic "Weekend at Bernie's" to permanently imprint his example on our minds. Great visual Code-man!! The point was well taken (as was his discussion of single men) that dragging the old man around pretending him still to be alive is exhausting and destructive. Reckoning the old man dead and walking in the newness of life is a cardinal element of growing in grace. Back to Justin's blog, to fulfill our Eph 5 obligation, there must be a continual renewal of the mind and growing in our understanding of who we are in Christ. Resting in our position has big implications on our condition and even bigger implications on how we clear the path for our wives' own spiritual growth.

In week 4, Matt dealt with the topic of redemption. It's a big, big word. The coupon analogy truly took me back, and the example was excellent! Kale reminded of us of this example in his blog installment "you have to do something in order to receive whatever the coupon promises and they always have expiration dates ."So analogous to so many "religious" systems, coupon ministries place us under a ministry of condemnation. They are inevitably a system which focuses on unmeetable demands and ultimately result in people giving up. Good call, my brother Kale, sounds like he might be familiar with the same? He then took us to Galatians to point out how Paul clearly shows that the Law was never given to impart life but to show that man in himself is incapable of good. Then to Gal 4:4-5 to show how redemption for the Jew resulted in adoption for us Gentiles!!!! Romans 8:1-4 rounded out Kales EW, NO CONDEMNATION (and no expiration date Chris!!! That chair is SOLID). Yes, I agree, Kale, contrast between Law of the Spirit, that of LIFE IN CHRIST and coupon religiosity indeed!!! Your daddy is dancin' a jig askin Paul to hold his mule!!!
How is this important to the Ephesians 5 marriage equation? Kale: "Instead of if you will then I will, we should approach marriage as because you are my wife....I will; we have become one flesh with them, just as we are part of the Body". It is precisely this order Paul follows in his epistles. It is enormously important that we always recall that if Christ's words in our Bibles are supposed to be in red, then every word in Paul's epistles should be red because that's Who gave'em to him!!! Ephesians 1-3 establishes who we are.........4-6 establishes how this affects the way we live our lives. The facts come first!

Week 5, the installment was "Sanctified ."Set apart. Matt used several references in scripture to show the meaning of this often complicated and even abused word in church circles. As a church, we are one of the few in this part of the world that teaches that our sanctification was accomplished by the work of the Cross and that it is our realization and perhaps appreciation of the same that is progressive, not sanctification itself. This is not a new topic, Matt is consistently mixing it into messages all the time, and to anyone who notices, I'll never apologize. We are complete in Him, nothing lacking!!!!! Stacy Warner then brought us a heartfelt EW discussing how being a New Creation with the Mind of Christ has moved him toward "how can I help you" stance with his bride rather than falling back to terms of endearment (which he noted are equally important that our wives hear). I love that. The Ephesians 5 model for marriage, remember, is part of a culmination of Paul describing what husbands, wives, children and and even servant/master relationships look like in the Body of Christ. This all begins as Stacy says with "He is the one that has perfected you and given you the mind of Christ and is working in you both to will and do of His good pleasure ."As husbands in this Eph 5 model, we are by design to nurture spiritual growth in our wives. We can't grow for them, but we have the absolute obligation to clear the path for their spiritual development. There is no joy like that of seeing your family grow in grace!!! That is not an accident!!!

I am not going to tackle wives. Matt did an excellent job Sunday; if you weren't there, go back and listen, then read all the blogs I have mentioned but first, before you do any of this, read the BOOK. There is not a more fundamentally powerful book in our Bibles than the book of Ephesians. You cannot be in the Bible too much!

(followed by the patented eye roll). Without having a solid idea about what Jesus accomplished for me on the cross, there is no other reasonable conclusion.

But in the past years, as I have come to more closely understand that I have the mind of Christ, I know that I not only want to serve my wife more, but I am capable of serving her. As a new creation (2 Cor. 5:17), I will necessarily see the world around me more as Jesus does.

When I first met my wife Mendy, "I Love You" was uttered often (I knew a good thing when I saw it!) Now, although still very common, I find myself much more often stating, "How can I help you?" When I ask her if she has heard "I Love You" enough that day if, she ever feels compelled to say “no," I always want her to be able to follow that with "...but I saw it."

So it seems the answer in 4th grade stands firm. Jesus is the answer. He is the one who, as a believer, has perfected you and given you the "mind of Christ" (1 Cor. 2:13-16). He is the one who is working in you to "will and to do in order to accomplish His good purpose" like being a Godly husband (Phil.2:13). It is His image of submission you bear when you forgo your ego and desires for the good of your wife and marriage (Phil. 2:7-8).

If we find ourselves at a place where we know our marriage is in trouble or want our marriage to be strengthened, it would seem that "Christ in me" (Col.1:27) is the pivot point.

It would seem that the crown of "Headship" that is granted to the husband in Ephesians is, in fact, often times a crown of thorns. However, you will scarcely have a more perfect opportunity to demonstrate Christ-likeness than in your relationships in your home.

I don't know if the source is known, but there is a story that goes something like this. It is said that Cyrus, the founder of the Persian Empire, once had captured a prince and his family. When they came before him, the monarch asked the prisoner, “What will you give me if I release you?” “The half of my wealth,” was his reply. “And if I release your children?” “Everything I possess.” “And if I release your wife?” “Your Majesty, I will give myself.” Cyrus was so moved by his devotion that he freed them all. As they returned home, the prince said to his wife, “Wasn’t Cyrus a handsome man! "With a look of deep love for her husband, she said to him, “I didn’t notice. I could only keep my eyes on you - the one who was willing to give himself for me.”

So to Todd Holt—if you ever read this, I officially apologize for every eye roll you endured from me after the flannel graph lesson in 4th-grade bible school. It turns out, you had the right answer all along.

This series has been based on the Apostle Paul’s instruction to us in Ephesians 5:25, “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church...”. This past Sunday’s message dealt with the topic of being Redeemed.
At the beginning of his message, Pastor Matt used the analogy of redeeming a coupon. He said much of “religion” is like a coupon, and there are different requirements, depending on the “coupon.” You have to do something in order to receive whatever it is they promise; some religions don’t accept other religions “coupons”; some religious structures have an expiration date, like the Old Covenant Law of Moses. In 2 Corinthians 3:9, the Apostle Paul calls the Old Covenant Law a ministry of death and condemnation. Many of us have been in churches that have placed us under the weight of the ministry of condemnation. In a religious system whose focus was the demand of certain requirements that you ultimately came to the realization could never be met. And...you just gave up.
Even though the Law was never given specifically to us, many denominations and religious leaders try to put us under the Law. In Romans 3:20, Paul tells us that no one is justified by the works of the Law. The Law gives us the knowledge of sin and our inability for self-justification. The “harder” you try not to do something, the more you find yourself giving in to that sin. You find yourself trying to uphold a Law that you can never live up to. The Law was never given to impart life. It was given to show that within yourself, you have no ability to keep it. The Apostle Paul says this in Galatians 3:21-22, “For if a law had been given that could impart life, then righteousness would certainly have come from the law. But the Scripture pronounces all things confined by sin, so that by faith in Jesus Christ the promise might be given to those who believe.”
The Law was never given to us, Gentiles, it was given to Israel, and it was pointing them towards Jesus. It was also very conditional, and Pastor Matt used this example as God speaking:

If you...Then I will

In other words, as a result of your obedience, God will bless you. But, like a coupon, the ministry of condemnation had an expiration date. Paul tells us this in Galatians 4:4-5, “But when the time had fully come, God sent His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law, that we might receive our adoption as sons.” So for the Jews, who were under the Law, (again, we as Gentiles never were), Jesus came to redeem them.
Paul’s message to us today in regards to this is given in Romans 8:1-4, “Therefore, there is no condemnation for those who are IN Christ Jesus. For IN Christ Jesus the law of the spirit of life set you free from the law of sin and death. For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful man, as an offering for sin. He thus condemned sin in the flesh, so that the righteous standard of the law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the spirit.” It seems to me there is quite a contrast between the law of condemnation and death and the law of the Spirit of life! Like my Daddy used to say....somebody hold my mules!!!
David led us in a song entitled Enough. It may be the most lyrically perfect song out there today. I’d encourage each of you to go back and listen to not only the song but what he said leading into it. Basically, the gist of the song is Jesus is enough. My favorite lyric in the song is in the first verse. It says:
I am not loved by the measure of love that I bring
I am not who I know, I am known by the King of all Kings
In other words, we bring nothing to the table, and yet we are called children of God! Nothing outside Christ is acceptable, yet when we place our faith IN Christ, we are accepted because He is accepted! So now to God, since Jesus is enough, YOU are enough! Tell me a better deal! To those of us in the Body of Christ, God no longer says, “If you will... Then I will.” He says to us:

Because you are... I will

So, in relation to the series, as husbands are called to love our wives as Christ loved the church, then this same principle should be applied to our marriages. We should never approach our relationship with our wife with an, “if you will...then I will” mentality. We should live out, “because you are my wife...I will”. We are united as one with our wives, just as we have been united with Christ as one.

Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life." Romans 6:3-4

Throughout the Bible, baptism is used as a means of identifying someone with something. 1 Corinthians 10:1-5 describes how Israel was "baptized unto Moses." Matthew 3:11 describes John the Baptist baptizing with water for repentance, but Jesus will come to baptize with the Holy Ghost and with fire. The Holy Ghost identifies them as Christ's and the fire, as the next verse states, judgment. These are just to name a few.

Romans 6:3-4 simply points out that we are identified with Christ's death and resurrection in that our old man has been crucified (Romans 6:6), and we are a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17). The pointing out is simple, but the implications are huge!

Similarly, now that I am married, I identify as being married, and I do not act as a single man does. The ways of a single man are not necessarily the same as that of the old man that has been crucified. In fact, the apostle Paul says that it's easier to focus on the things of the Lord when you are single (1 Corinthians 7). I don't want the single folks feeling like they have to get married.

Every time I hear a reference to dragging the old man around, I can't help but think about the 80s movie Weekend at Bernie's. The two main characters are invited to a weekend beach house by their boss for a party. When they arrive, they find their boss is dead and spend the rest of the movie trying to convince all the partygoers that nothing is wrong. Just like in the movie, when you drag your old man around pretending it is alive, it's exhausting!

Not only is dragging the old man around exhausting, it can be destructive. The chair doesn’t seem to be giving me a lot of security.
A lot of times, it will affect my conversation or focus because it’s constantly in the back of my mind that this chair is gonna break and I’m gonna be flat on my back on the floor. So I’m not real invested in the conversation or whatever, and I’m just thinking of ways to hurry up and get out of there.
But I think about the chair in my living room. I know that one is sturdy and has me 100% and if I’m not careful and I sit still too long at any given time, it won’t be long, and I’ll be asleep and drool running down my face. So, where am I going with this?
Eph 2:4-10
“But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the ages to come He might show the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.”
Verse 6 tells us we’ve been raised up in Him and seated with Him in heavenly places IN Christ Jesus. We’ve been seated with Him; that’s our rest, our Security. The chair He has us seated in is 100% sturdy and secure. We don’t have that worry in the back of our mind that keeps us distracted, constantly wondering if we are being good enough or doing enough to make God happy, and just like the song we sang Sunday morning, Lean Back, we can lean back in the loving arms of our beautiful father, breathe deep and know that He is good.

The chair He has us seated in is 100% sturdy and secure

I believe until you have the security issue settled, you’ll never fully be able to move forward in your spiritual growth. So it’s something that is most important to deal with. It took me a lot of years to get a grasp on this, but once I did, it completely changed my life, and I know without a doubt my chair can never be shaken.
Guys, how do we relate this to our marriage? If we are to love our wives, as Eph 5:25 says, she will need to feel that same security. She needs to know she’s loved and that we have her best interest at heart, and there are no conditions on that.
I wish I could tell you I’ve always done this, but I haven’t. I was pretty good at the financial security part, but the chair was wobbly on the spiritual, emotional, and physical parts. For me, it started with my security in my faith, then that bled over into my marriage. Once the spiritual part gets handled, then I’m a firm believer the financial, emotional, and physical parts naturally line up.

Justin Magness - Growing in our understanding of who we are in Christ and ministering that knowledge and truth are how we have love, peace, and happiness in our marriage. Men, we can’t love our wives as Christ loved the church if we do not fully understand how He showed His love towards the Church. Men, we can’t love our wives as our own body if we do not have a thorough understanding of what it means to be in the body of Christ, what it means to be IN Christ and have Christ IN us. He set the stage with a study over Ephesians 5:25-33, a very often studied and discussed passage because Paul speaks specifically regarding marriage.
"Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her, so that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, that He might present to Himself the church in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that she would be holy and blameless. So husbands also ought to love their own wives as their own bodies. He who loves his own wife loves himself; for no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ also does the church, because we are parts of His body. For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. This mystery is great; but I am speaking with reference to Christ and the church. Nevertheless, as for you individually, each husband is to love his own wife the same as himself, and the wife must see to it that she respects her husband."
An often-overlooked part of this passage is verse 32, where Paul makes the connection to marriage and the mystery of Christ. The mystery of Christ is that at Salvation, we are placed in Christ and Christ in us. Paul writes in Colossians 1:27-28 that “To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory: Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus.”
If marriage was created to be a representation of Christ in us and us in Christ, we must first understand what that means.
You IN Christ.
By Grace through faith, Christ spiritually seated us in heavenly places where we receive all his blessings, inheritance, and power. We are in the body of Christ, placed there by the Spirit in fellowship forever with Him. This is our position! Everything we do is from this position.
Christ IN you.
By Grace through faith, Christ crucified your sin nature and poured his spirit into your heart, making you dead to sin. Having Christ in us allows us to be the vessels He uses to perform through us and in us. This is what drives our wants and desires. This is life change in the here and now!
Growing in our understanding of who we are in Christ and ministering that knowledge and truth are how we have love, peace, and happiness in our marriage. Men, we can’t love our wives as Christ loved the church if we do not fully understand how He showed His love towards the Church.
Love One Another

Old Made New - New Name

Bill Morel - Do we believe we are Saints?
Growing up in church as kids, we would sing "Jesus Loves Me" all the time. We believed that was true "because the Bible tells me so." How then is it so hard for us to believe that he truly did give us a new name? I think it's because we believed what the adults taught us as children and took it as fact. After all, we had faith in them to not lead us wrong. However, as adults, we tend to overthink, over-analyze, and often over-spiritualize biblical truths because we can't fathom that it truly is as simple as the Bible says it is.

God's economy functions in ways that our minds can't understand because we only have our experiences and knowledge of this world to draw from. That's why when Matt was talking about the church in Corinth and how Paul started the letter by calling them sanctified and holy, we get confused. It sure doesn't seem like these people come close to living up to being sanctified and holy. That's just it—he was rebuking them not so they would start living better to "get back into fellowship with God" but because they were not living with the understanding of who they were. In Ephesians 4:1 Paul encourages us to "live a life worthy of our calling." This isn't about sinning less, even though that is the result. It is about understanding what the Bible says about who we are and living life out of the abundance of God's grace.
Matt brought us Romans 5, where Paul explains how sin entered the world through one man's sin, Adam. Then how sin was dealt with by the one Christ who lived a perfect life yet died on the cross for us for ALL sins. Paul goes on to explain the struggle and the consequences of sin and the need for the Law to point sin out. Then, in the end of chapter 7, he thanks God for delivering him sin. The beginning of chapter 8 makes me smile every time: "Therefore, there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ."
On the day of our salvation, we are "in Christ," and at that very moment, we are given a new name, Saint. It is not a name we can achieve but one given to us simply because we chose to have faith in Christ. Often, we may not "feel" saintly, but thankfully, it isn't about our feelings. It was always about just believing that "Jesus Loves me because the Bible tells me so."

I would have been too embarrassed to tell you that in the past, but recognizing that I don’t have the answers will make me a better student of the word.
Matt referenced Romans 8:6-8 and the fact that if you pull this out and apply it to yourself as a believer, you will start to question whether or not you can please God. As with any scripture that you will ever read, knowing who you are in Christ will change how you view the scripture. Knowing that they that are in the flesh cannot please God is not talking about you? How do you know? Look at Romans 8:9, “But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit.” It was so hard for me to wrap my mind around this for years. I struggled with scripture that seemed to indicate that I was in the flesh and the flesh was lost! That is because I was reading it and trying to apply it to myself as a believer. I had heard for years that I had a depraved mind because of my thoughts and actions. If you struggle with this, then this message will be a game-changer for you as you discover the difference between what the enemy wants you to think about yourself and who you really are in Christ.
Matt referenced that Christ crucified is a stumbling block to the Jews and foolishness to the Greeks and that God was pleased to make the wise foolish. The Jews required a sign, and the Greeks sought after wisdom, and on these bases, they rejected Christ. But to we who are saved, Christ crucified is the power of God and the wisdom of God. We have been made righteous by what Christ did on the cross. Who we were is not who we are now. We were raised with Christ; we are a new creation with a new heart and a new mind. We have been given the mind of Christ!

Who we were is not who we are now.

Wow, I remember the first time I heard that. I could not even imagine what that meant and am still trying to wrap my mind around it. If I had the mind of Christ, why did I struggle so? Paul gets right to the point in Romans 7:14-25. There is a war going on between our mind, what we want to do, and our body and what we end up giving into. Who is going to set you free from this war? Jesus. We taught Kindergarteners for many years, and they soon realized the answer was always Jesus. I love this answer for the war that wages in me. Not me, not my resolve, not some self-help book but JESUS!!!! The spirit of God will never lead you down a path that will cause destruction in your life. Your mind has to be set on the Spirit of God. Matt gives us some scripture to help us with this. Col 3:2 set your mind on things above (Bible) and Philippians 4:6-8 think on these things that are true, honest, just, pure, lovely and are of good report. I hope this lesson helps each of you.

Specifically, what it means for us in our walk in Christ as we deal with the desires of the flesh.
Matt centered the message around Colossians 2:11-15. Paul writes,
“In Him also you were circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the powerful working of God, who raised him from the dead. And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross.”
Having a better understanding of what took place in my heart at salvation has been pivotal for my personal growth in knowing and understanding who I am in Christ. It is very easy to fall into the trap of believing that salvation was nothing more than being saved from an eternity in Hell, and that we are left to do the best we can until Jesus comes. This is typically rooted in not having an understanding of the fact that we are dead to sin. Paul clearly states that our sins and transgressions were crucified on the cross. If I am dead to sin, then why do I still sin? Why do I do things that I know are wrong? These are very common questions we have probably asked ourselves many, many times. We read verses in the Bible that talk about our hearts being deceitful and to keep trying within our own power to stop, not realizing that these verses are either not written to us or are in reference to who we once were before putting our faith in Him. If I can’t trust my heart for guidance, if I have to strive from within to overcome the sin that is still desired in my flesh, then what was even given to me in the here and now?
Flesh. We have to understand that we are still in the same body we were born with, and our flesh still desires the things of this world. The Spirit of God that dwells in your heart and you in Him is the guide to listen to; He tells you that what your flesh is desiring goes against who you are now IN Christ. It is not your heart that leads you to do things you know go against the desires of the Spirit, but the flesh. In Salvation, Christ cut away those desires from your heart and rendered them dead. Thankfully for us, we can stand on the fact that we are dead to that desire; it has no power over us. Our life is in Christ. It is not a matter of us not striving enough because we did nothing to earn salvation; it was freely gifted to those who believe in Him.
The desires of the flesh are powerful and our Enemy uses them at every chance he can get. There’s a reason so many of us struggle with this truth. We must know our Enemy and how he works to be prepared for his strikes. How do we do that? Get into the Word. It gives us all we need to recognize when our flesh is at work in our lives, how to confidently stand on the unwavering truth that we are dead to who we once were, and the knowledge of the strength we have to stand in victory IN Him.

As believers, we often take the world’s view of hope and apply it to our lives. We say things like, “I hope the weather cooperates today.” …or “I hope 2022 is a better year than 2021.” …or “I hope I can find a different job.” So often when we use the word hope in these instances, we are merely wishfully thinking that something might turn out the way we want.
As far as the world is concerned, wishful thinking is all it has to rely on. There is no anchor for true hope in their lives and circumstances. But as believers, we have a true hope, a hope that is an anchor for our soul. (Hebrews 6:19).
Our worship pastor, David Magness, leads us in a song titled “Anchor”. It’s one of my favorite songs that we sing, and David does a tremendous job on it. And it’s been playing in my head this week as I’ve prepared for a follow up post from Sunday’s message. So often, we like a song because it has a nice musical arrangement or it’s easy to remember and fun to sing. I love this song because it’s all of that, plus so much more as there are tremendous lyrics in that song that are a great encouragement to believers.
I’ll post a link to the song, but I want to look at a few of the lines to hopefully encourage you as much as I am encouraged.
“Through every storm, I will hold to You.”
For those in the world, they only have things of this world to hold on to in the trials and storms of life: at best, self-help strategies, worldly counsel to try harder and secular meditation techniques…at worst drugs, alcohol, and outbursts of anger.
But as a believer, we have Jesus, who calmed the physical storm of the seas with just a Word spoken, so that we can know He has power and control over the storms in our lives. We aren’t promised that we won’t experience storms in our lives. But we do have the promise that He is in control and we can rest in knowing that He will calm the storms.
“With endless love, all my fear is swept away.”
Fear isn’t of God. If there is something you fear, which leads to worry, know that the enemy is trying to destroy your faith and disrupt your rest. But as believers, we can know and stand firm on the truth that “Perfect love casts out fear” – the Apostle John in 1 John 4. God’s perfect love should give us hope that no matter what comes our way, we don’t have to fear. Paul tells us that whenever we worry or find ourselves anxious, to take our requests to God and the peace that surpasses understanding will guard our hearts (Philippians 4). What you’ll find is your fear being swept away in God’s endless love.
“Your name is higher, Your name is greater, All my hope is in You.”
In 1 Corinthians 6:11, the apostle Paul tells us that we were washed, we were justified and we were sanctified in the name of Jesus. Simply put, we were made righteous in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:21), which means we are accepted in Him Ephesiasn 1:6), and we have the fullness of Christ dwelling in us (Colossians 1:19-22). And as believers, that is where our HOPE is found. In Christ.
Hope is something that the world cannot offer. To have Hope is to have peace for our minds and rest for our soul amidst life’s trials and storms. You can turn to the things of this world in an attempt to find rest, but you will never find it. The apostle Paul’s prayer in Romans 15:13 is that the God of hope will fill you with joy and peace so that you will abound in hope. You don’t have to go looking for it, you don’t have to work for it, you don’t have to jump through religious hoops to receive it. As a believer, you have been united with the God of HOPE. He is in you. You have to know it, believe it, stand firm on that truth and simply rest in it.
Whatever you may be going through, don’t let the enemy disrupt your faith and your rest that you have in Christ. Set your mind on His Word, go to Him and make your requests known, and watch how the peace that surpasses understanding guards your heart and your mind; and let His hope anchor your soul.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=87GYkLfQQ-8

We have peace with God, yet it is our choice to fully accept that truth.

God is pleased with us because He is pleased with His son Jesus.

One of the most beautiful passages in all of scripture is Luke 3:22, when Jesus goes down to be baptized. Once you consider that beautiful picture of complete acceptance, then the words of Ephesians 1:6 should give us ultimate peace.
"To the praise of the glory of His grace, wherin He hath made us accepted in the beloved." Yes, Ephesians 2 tells us that we were once foreigners with no relationship to God, but now we have been brought near by the blood of Christ...and, "For He Himself is our peace..." We no longer have to worry about whether God is upset with us, mad at us, or disappointed in us. What we know is that God is pleased with us. He is pleased with us because He is pleased with His son Jesus and He has placed us in the beloved by putting us in Christ and Christ in us. It isn't just knowledge but acceptance of this truth that allows us to rest in peace. We can know and believe that, despite how we may see ourselves, this is how the God of the universe sees us because of the Savior of the world.
Years ago, a song lyric said, "Oh how He loves you and me." Do you really believe that? Or do we think of God as a disciplinarian or disappointed Father that shows favor to His children based only on their actions? As Pastor mentioned Sunday, this peace treaty offered by God through Jesus is unconditional for those in Christ. We do nothing to get or keep His peace. However, as we believe, we can enjoy His peace more.
In the coming days before we celebrate Christmas, consider another beautiful picture shown to us in Luke 2:13-14. "Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom His favor rests." And if you want to know the "whom His favor rests," know that is you if you have chosen to believe in Christ! From there, rest. Rest in His peace. Give Him praise, and accept your place in the present and eternal beloved of God.

Gaudy Christmas - Gaudy Love

Randy Hagar - Pastor Matt described Jesus' offering of Himself as the greatest act of sacrificial love to ever take place and then took us to the Ephesians 5 explanation of Christ's love of the church for further understanding. What we have in this chapter is perhaps an example we can better grasp as Paul gives us similarities which this love of Christ has to what the love of a man (a saved man) should have for his spouse and even love for himself. We understand from the teaching earlier in this same chapter that these things are only possible to us as we are filled with the Spirit!

(John 15:13-14 KJV)

These verses are quoted from evangelical pulpits across the land more often at the time we celebrate the resurrection, rather than the birth of Christ, and appropriately so since the timing of these verses was the last week prior to the crucifixion. Pastor used vs 13 in Sunday's message when describing God's love toward man in Christ as He gave Himself a sacrifice and this was somewhat of a culmination of the John 3:16 verse "God so loved" that he began his message with. Let's dig a little deeper.

Pastor Matt described Jesus' offering of Himself as the greatest act of sacrificial love to ever take place and then took us to the Ephesians 5 explanation of Christ's love of the church for further understanding.

Our concept of love is influenced by so many things (tremendous background noise from the world), but as believers, we were challenged on Sunday to understand, embrace and allow to manifest the love of God in our lives as it is taught in Scripture. In effect, the Romans 5:5 love that has been "shed abroad" in our hearts by the Holy Spirit is present in abundance for the purpose that we not only show it to the church, which is His Body but equally to a lost and dying world!!!! (that makes them curious!)

Matt went on to speak of the unsustainable nature of "human" love. You know whether it is an unbeliever "trying" to love his neighbor through a confused sense of doing right in sufficient quantity to please God and make it to Heaven; or if it is a person having believed in the finished work of Christ on the Cross and yet still attempting to "love God more" through a list of some type, there is eventual frustration at the end. Of course, one leads to eternal damnation (which our enemy delights in), and the other leads to a hamster wheel of perpetual works (which our enemy also delights in).

So what is the solution to living in a world that loves hate and hates love (pastor's words)? Let's go back to the verses we began with. Jesus said (in my words)"here is the greatest form of love that a man can generate, that he lays down his life for his friends". And yet we find something added in Romans 5 that desperately needs our attention:

For when we were yet without strength, in due time, Christ died for the ungodly. (Romans 5:6 KJV)

But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:8 KJV)

For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life. (Romans 5:10 KJV)

Man can love enough to die for his friends, we are told, and yet God's love toward us is such that while we were yet without strength and ungodly, while we were yet sinners, even while we were still enemies (not friends), Christ died for us!!!! That's God's love in this age of grace!!!! And the more we read of it and study it, especially in the instructions He left for the Body of Christ through our Apostle Paul for this time, then the more we plumb the depths of something that is beyond understanding.

In Acts 13:33, Psalms 2:7, Hebrews 1:5, and again in Hebrews 5:5 we see God proclaiming to Christ the Son "this day have I begotten thee," all of these being references to the resurrection and not the birth of Christ. Christmas is a joyous celebration of God coming to earth to perform that which was promised to Israel (Luke 1:68-75). The path for Gentiles was yet to be revealed to man absent exalted Israel (at the time of the crucifixion and for some time after it was still through Israel according to prophecy). There was as yet no understanding that Jew and Gentile would be concluded in unbelief together (the revelation of the mystery: absent the Law, absent Israel, absent any covenant.......the blood of Christ was also sufficient). This was all yet to be revealed and taught at this point. But at this perfect time (Gal 4:4-5) and not a minute too soon or too late the love of God manifest that would eventually:

Lead to the blood of the Cross, and then

The preaching of the Cross, and then

Would provide the opportunity for man to accept the finished work of Christ which would allow him to

Be indwelt by God the Holy Spirit, and then

Dwell here on this earth as an ambassador of that same grace,

All of this began in the moment (before the foundations of the world) that God the Son chose to humble Himself and come to earth in the likeness of man (Phil 2:2-11 that "same love" which we are let reside in us that Matt spoke of Sunday).

Seeing all of this and knowing it was in the mind/plan of God before the foundation of the world:

IT TWERN'T PLAN B!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's the love of Christ which passeth knowledge!!!!!

Study it all your own self, ingest all you can; it is a feast that has no endpoint with depths that cannot be plumbed to the end.
